5 out of 8 in the opening round wasn't too bad, but certainly I'll want to be doing better than that on average. Anyway, here's my kiss of death for round 2.
Carlton v Essendon - Both teams would have been disappointed with their opening round efforts. The Blues looked flat, unlike their pre-season form; while the Bombers were never in the hunt against Melbourne. But the Bombers, under Sheedy, will have a few tricks up their sleeve and now's when they've got to play some. Essendon to win.
Western Bulldogs v Melbourne - Both sides got good wins first-up. On paper the Demons look stronger, but psychologically it'll be hard to come up again after the emotion of last week. I'll still tip the Demons, but it'll be close.
Kangaroos v Sydney - The Swans looked sensational last week, and now find themselves taking on their whipping-boys from Arden St. A great start to the season to continue for the red and whites.
West Coast v Geelong - This promises to be a classic. The Eagles will welcome their return to Subiaco this week, a ground that certainly hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the Cats. The house of pain hoodoo will continue - Eagles to win.
Port Adelaide v Brisbane - The grand final replay, with Port to unfurl their premiership flag. A reminder of happier days for the Power compared to their shock loss to Freo last week, and back at home the premiership form will return - Port to win.
St Kilda v Fremantle - St Kilda travel to Tasmania, their 2nd interstate trip in a row, without injured captain Nick Riewoldt and will face a Freo team sky-high in confidence after knocking off Port. But there's still plenty of class in the Saints lineup, especially Gehrig up forward - I'll tip the Saints here, but not with any degree of confidence.
Collingwood v Adelaide - Both were disappointing first-round losers, and the Magpies are further devastated with Buckley out of the team. But at home against a young & inexperienced Crows lineup the Magpies should do enough to fall over the line.
Hawthorn v Richmond - A clash of potential cellar-dwellars, both these sides looked dismal last week. For the loser, the knives will be out early this season. It's hard to find an argument to tip either, but I've got a hunch the Hawks will get up.
